Along with faux finishes and hygge, renovations are trending. After surveying more than 100,000 of their registered users a few months ago, home renovation and design platform Houzz just released its 2017 Houzz & Home Report, and the company announced homeowners spent 11 percent more on room makeovers in 2016 than they did the year before. (Even more impressive: This number excludes kitchens and baths.)

If you’re imagining massive basement renos and living room transformations, think again. The spots that garnered the most monetary investment were two unexpected places that we spend a lot of time in: the laundry room and master bedroom. According to the report, “average spend on laundry room and master bedroom remodels grew 24 percent and 23 percent, respectively.” Kitchen and bath renovations cost much more than these projects, of course, but that spending has stayed more or less the same.

As for the makeover itself? “The functionality of a laundry room is key,” design expert Gillian Pinchin told us in our story on renovating the small space. Head there for her top ideas for the well-designed room you’ve always wanted. As for master bedrooms, we’ve rounded up our favorite before-and-afters right here. Whatever your design direction, rest assured. This is a trend with serious staying power.
